Project Name
The Mummification Process Video
Project Description
Getty conservators and conservation scientists have done a great deal of research and analysis on the Romano-Egyptian mummy Herakleides in the Museum's collection. Drawing on this rich documentation, we produced an animation that explains how Herakleides was mummified, describing the various steps and materials used in the process. The video describes some unusual characteristics of our mummy—the fact that an ibis was mummified with him, for example—while also portraying common aspects of the mummification process in general. Given the sensitivities in interpreting archaeological human remains, a thoughtful approach was taken with this project. For instance, removal of the internal organs is conveyed with animation rather than graphic photographic images, as some viewers might find the latter disturbing. Featured at the Getty Villa, this video is our first in-gallery media in the permanent collection galleries of the Museum.
