Project Name
Online Art Museum Collections as a Resource for Teachers
Project Description
A design based research pilot study that investigated a new approach to visual literacy that integrated theories of visual learning and art interpretation with general teaching and curricula development practices. The study hypothesized that: (a) visual literacy is a product of observation and analogical reasoning skills that can be cultivated through developmental learning tools (rather than a novice-to-expert process predicated on the development of specialized language) and (b) that aesthetic development can be cultivated through guided forms of focused art exposure and critical viewing. The designed learning tool focused on making online art museum collection content accessible to non-art educators. The method synthesized research strategies developed within the information sciences (Kuhltau, Caspari, Maniotes, 2007) with perceptual learning techniques and art-specific strategies of observation, selection, and interpretation (Dorn, Sabol, Madeja, & Sabol, 2004).
